Let us do the migration →

Move an IBM DB2 database into PostgreSQL. DBConvert creates the PostgreSQL tables, keys and indexes, picks a type for every DB2 column, and copies the rows server to server.

  • Reads DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows 11.1 and later.
  • Writes to PostgreSQL, Amazon RDS or Aurora, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Google Cloud SQL, or Supabase.
  • Reaches a DB2 server through the built-in SSH tunnel.
  • Runs on Windows as a desktop application.
  • The same download converts PostgreSQL into DB2.

Large DB2 tables, read in parallel

A large table is split into ranges of its key and read on several threads at once. Every row is read once, without paging through the table. Keys of SMALLINT, INTEGER, BIGINT and VARCHAR are split.

How DB2 types map to PostgreSQL

These are the defaults. Change any column's type on the Tables step before a row moves.

In DB2 In PostgreSQL
DECIMAL, DECFLOAT DECIMAL keeps its precision. DECFLOAT becomes numeric without a precision, which holds every value exactly.
TIMESTAMP timestamp with up to 6 fraction digits, the PostgreSQL limit. The Tables step marks a DB2 TIMESTAMP with more digits.
CHAR, VARCHAR, CLOB char and varchar. CLOB and long text become text.
BLOB, XML, BOOLEAN bytea, xml and boolean.
Upper-case names Unquoted DB2 names are stored in upper case. They arrive in lower case, so queries need no quotes.
Identity, defaults An identity column keeps its values and continues after them. CURRENT TIMESTAMP and other special-register defaults are not carried over.

What stays behind

DBConvert moves tables, columns, keys, indexes, foreign keys, defaults and rows. Views, procedures, functions and triggers are not converted: rewrite them by hand for the new database.

DB2 means DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows 11.1 or later. DB2 for z/OS and IBM i (AS/400) are not supported.

Supported versions and services

How to migrate IBM DB2 to PostgreSQL

1

Setup: connect IBM DB2 and PostgreSQL

Choose the source and destination connections side by side on one screen. A connection is saved once and reused by every job.

The Setup step in DBConvert: the mode, the IBM DB2 source and PostgreSQL destination side by side, and the job name

DB2 source

Enter the host, port (50000 by default), database name, user and password. Leave the schema empty for the login's own. See Connect IBM DB2.

PostgreSQL target

Follow the PostgreSQL connection guide for your own server, Amazon RDS / Aurora, Azure, Google Cloud SQL, or Supabase. DB2 names arrive in lower case.

Move IBM DB2 data into PostgreSQL

Download the current build and run the first job against your own database.
